RM Sotheby’s will auction a 1952 Chrysler Styling Special by Ghia next month.
The model is the original Chrysler Special and is based on a New Yorker short frame.
There is no reserve, but the car is expected to fetch at least $500,000.
Monterey Car Week is home to some of the most prestigious auctions in the country, and they’re stepping up to the plate again with a 1952 Chrysler Styling Special by Ghia.
The car is to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s on August 15, the car debuted at the 1952 Paris Motor Show and is the original “Chrysler Special”. Despite being based on a New Yorker, the sports coupe has a short frame and an unmistakable European feel. That said, the model is still an American land yacht as it is 214 inches (5,436 mm) long and 119 inches (3,023 mm) between the wheels.
In addition to being larger than the outgoing Dodge Challenger, the Styling Special has a timeless design with soft curves and chrome accents. They are joined by a large grille, circular headlights and a fastback roof. Other features include a hydraulically controlled spare tire access door and a 40-gallon fuel tank with an “auto-fill cap.”
The two-tone interior features a three-person bench as well as a rear luggage rack. They are paired with a chrome steering wheel, circular gauges and a radio.
The listing notes that Chrysler has been modified and updated many times over the years. Aside from the occasional paint job, it was equipped with a 1955 FirePower Hemi engine that still resides under the hood.
The listing goes on to say that the latest restoration remains in “good condition.” However, he notes that there are some issues, including the paint.
That said, the car looks fantastic and is one of a kind. Given this, it’s no surprise that the model is expected to cost between $500,000 – $650,000 (€460,000 – €600,000 / £390,000 – £500,000).
